HS Clay Bed & Breakfast
Our History
The H.S. Clay, an historic B&B in Augusta, Missouri
Steeped in history and charm, H.S. Clay House Bed & Breakfast has been a landmark in Augusta, Missouri since September 8, 1881, when the ‘St. Charles Demokrat’ reported that Dr. Hampson Strother Clay, a distinguished 1873 graduate of the Missouri Medical College, announced his intention to practice medicine in Augusta. Prior to his arrival in Augusta, Dr. Clay had already established a reputation as one of the leading physicians in Missouri during his eight years in Darst Bottom.
In 1885, Dr. Clay built the house that is our B&B today, as a loving home for his second wife, Marie Koch Clay, and their growing family. Here, they raised four sons and five daughters, embedding a legacy of medical service as all sons pursued careers in medicine, while one daughter followed in her father’s caring footsteps as a nurse, and two became educators.
After the birth of their ninth child, Dr. Clay succumbed to illness, leaving Marie to guide their family through the years. The resilience and spirit of the Clay family continue to permeate through the walls of this Bed & Breakfast, offering guests not just a hotel or simple place to stay but a chance to connect with the rich history of Augusta.
Today, if you are looking for places to stay in Augusta, Mo., the H.S. Clay House stands not only as a testament to a family’s legacy but also as a premier lodging destination in Missouri’s wine country, seamlessly blending historical richness with modern comfort. Perfect for those searching for a unique Bed & Breakfast experience, or even those considering local hotels or Airbnb alternatives. Our BnB offers an intimate glimpse into the past of Augusta, Missouri—making it an ideal retreat for guests who appreciate the convergence of history and hospitality.
Marie Clay continued to nurture the home’s legacy from 1886 until September 1948, when she relocated to Poplar Bluff to reside with her son, Dr. Hampson Strother Clay. She passed away in December 1955 at the venerable age of 92. The original property stretched over an entire city block, housing Dr. Clay’s medical office at the corner of Walnut and Ferry Streets, alongside a horse barn, an orchard, and the family residence.
In 1956, the property left the Clay family’s hands. The subsequent owners introduced the home’s “first” bathroom and central heating, paving the way for modern upgrades to all rooms. A significant restoration initiated in 1986 by a general contractor revived the home’s former splendor, maintaining its historical essence while integrating contemporary comforts which can still be seen to this day in the Bed & Breakfast.
