Step Into the Open Air
Plein air painting is a term derived from the French phrase “En plein air,” which translates to “in the open air.” It refers to the act of painting outdoors, capturing scenes directly from nature. This artistic practice became popular in the mid-19th century with the advent of portable easels and paint tubes, allowing artists to venture into the countryside to paint landscapes and scenes as they appeared in natural light. Plein air painting emphasizes the immediacy of the moment, capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. And of course, be sure to participate in the Art “Paint Outs,” where artists create masterpieces en plein air, followed by judging to showcase their talent.
