How to Get Here

The HS Clay House is very easy to find in Augusta since we are the only 3 story Victorian house in town (let’s face it there are only a few streets in town).  However, if you are like me and drive by landmarks, here are a few:

  • The back yard of the B&B faces Augusta Elementary School
  • We are at the corner of Walnut and Public (yes, the address is on Public even though it’s the side street)
  • We are across the street from the Ebenezer United Church of Christ
  • The Gallery Augusta is across the street
  • The front street is the historic Walnut business district

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never stayed at a B&B before and I’m not sure what to expect.

A B&B is a different lodging type from a hotel or an AirBnB and is more of an experience!    When you stay at a B&B such as the HS Clay House, you can expect to interact with other guests as well as the Innkeeper.  There are often amenities not found in a traditional hotel, such as breakfast, beverages and snacks.  Breakfast is served on vintage china with cloth napkins for a luxurious touch.  The HS Clay House is located in an 1885 Queen Anne Victorian House that has been updated with modern amenities but still has much of its’ historic charm.   Kelly, the HS Clay Innkeeper, can help curate your stay by recommending things to do and see in the area.

Why stay at a B&B as opposed to an AirBnb?

At an AirBnB, typically you are given a code to let yourself in and often you do not interact with the owner or other guests.  Most AirBnB locations do not provide breakfast or other snacks.

How many bathrooms does the HS Clay House have and are they private?

The HS Clay House Bed and Breakfast has 6 full and one half bath.   Two of the rooms also have ensuite baths – meaning you do not have to leave the room to utilize them.   The other baths are assigned to specific rooms so that everyone has a private bathroom.  For the baths that are not ensuite, you have to leave the room to access them.

Can you accommodate dietary preferences at breakfast?

Yes, dietary preferences can be accommodated.   As an Innkeeper, there is nothing more rewarding than serving a breakfast that guests enjoy.

What other amenities do you provide?

The HS Clay house has many shared spaces for guests to enjoy, such as the outside deck, fire pit, and gardens.  Inside the house there are two large sitting rooms with televisions and working fireplaces.   The pool house has a shuffleboard table.   There is internet access and cable television.  In addition to breakfast, there are other snacks and beverages.

Is there storage for bikes?

Yes, the HS Clay House has a garage to safely store bikes.

When is the pool and hot tub open?

The hot tub is open year-round and was installed in 2022.   The pool is open seasonally, typically May to September.

What is the history of the HS Clay House?

The HS Clay House was built in 1885 by a local doctor named Hampson Strother Clay.   He and his wife Marie raised 9 children in the house.   As with many old houses, there have been a couple of additions (such as the large kitchen) which makes it the perfect space to be used as a B&B.

Can I rent the entire house for an event?

Absolutely!   The HS Clay House is the perfect spot for a family get away, a wedding party, or other celebration.   Guests who rent the whole house have access to all rooms including the kitchen. The gourmet kitchen includes a new convection oven, KitchenAid stand mixer, and double dishwashers.

What is there to do in Augusta?

Augusta is filled with fun and exciting things to do!  There are 5 wineries in the immediate Augusta area and located within a short drive are 6 others.  The Katy Trail State Park runs through Augusta and is perfect for a bike ride, a hike or a walk.  Nearby Klondike Park offers great hiking.  Augusta shops offer a variety of services.   Augusta also has a top-notch spa, Halycon, for spa services.

Where do you recommend that we have dinner?

The two restaurants in town are Root Food + Wine and The White House Tavern.   Both are excellent choices.   There are also a variety of options outside of Augusta.  The host can also recommend special events occurring in the area, such as farm house dinners at wineries.   A local chef can also serve dinner at the B&B.

Can I get an Uber in Augusta?

Likely not.  The last time anyone tried to order an Uber a vehicle never showed up.  There is a taxi service for those who want to head outside Augusta.
