When I first took over The H.S. Clay House Bed & Breakfast in 2020, I reflected on everything I had learned during that first year. That post turned out to be one of my most widely viewed Facebook posts. Five years later, I’ve realized something else—every year brings new lessons, new guests, and new experiences.
Looking back over the past five years, I’ve realized that running a Bed & Breakfast isn’t really about rooms or reservations. It’s about people, conversations, unexpected moments, and the little details that turn a visit into a memory. These are just a few of the lessons that have stayed with me the most.
Whether you’re a returning guest or looking for a unique Bed & Breakfast in Augusta MO, I hope these reflections give you a glimpse into what makes The H.S. Clay House so special.
10. Humor Makes Everything Better
Humor goes a long way. Whether it’s telling a bad joke, poking fun at the quirks of an 1885 Victorian home, or laughing together when something doesn’t go exactly as planned, humor helps turn stressful moments into memorable ones. I’ve found that guests appreciate authenticity—and a good laugh.
9. A Little Inspiration Goes a Long Way
A couple of years ago, I picked up a little book called Little Love Letters while visiting Florida. Whenever I remember to share one of its short readings over breakfast, it always seems to brighten someone’s morning.
There’s something special about starting the day with a little encouragement before heading out to explore Augusta Wine Country.
8. Stay Hydrated!
One thing I’ve learned is that good filtered water is an important part of the Bed & Breakfast experience. Do you really know anyone who drinks enough water?
Funny enough, insulated water bottles have become the number one item guests accidentally leave behind. Ask to see my collection the next time you visit!
7. Every Piece of Artwork Has a Story
Artwork has a wonderful way of starting conversations. Some of my favorite pieces have come from galleries, flea markets, and especially the Augusta Plein Air Festival.
Some personal favorites include Bryan Haynes’ White Oak print in the kitchen, Jim Mayfield’s photography—including Clarence and Roscoe Jones, Men from the Earth—and several beautiful Plein Air paintings by Troy Tatlock, Tammy Dickerson, and Susan Rogers.
If you enjoy art, be sure to ask for a quick tour during your stay. I’d love to share the stories behind many of these special pieces.

6. Collections Tell Stories
The H.S. Clay House has become the perfect place to display collections I’ve gathered over the years. While the antiques market may have changed, I still love hunting for unique treasures.
Some of my favorites include blue and white porcelain, English ironstone pitchers, silverplate, and vintage china. Every piece has its own story and helps give the house its unique character.
5. Beautiful Tables Make Breakfast Better
A thoughtfully set table is an important part of the Bed & Breakfast experience. Placemats, china, silver utensils, cloth napkins, and fresh flowers all help transform breakfast into something guests remember long after they return home.
Sometimes it’s the little details that make the biggest difference.
4. Flowers Make Everything Better
Flowers simply make people happy.
Whether they’re picked from the garden, purchased locally, or part of a flower subscription, fresh flowers brighten every room. One of my favorite quotes comes from Luther Burbank:
“Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.”
I couldn’t agree more.
3. Books Bring People Together
I love books—and I especially enjoy hearing what my guests are reading. Some of my favorite breakfast conversations have started with a simple question: “What are you reading these days?”
Stay tuned for an upcoming Book Weekend where we’ll gather to discuss great books, enjoy wonderful food, and spend time together.
Be sure to check our Events & Blog page for upcoming themed weekends and special experiences.
2. Great Food Creates Great Memories
Food is one of the most important parts of the Bed & Breakfast experience.
Breakfast isn’t just a meal—it’s how I hope you’ll begin a wonderful day exploring Augusta. I spend a lot of time planning menus, trying new recipes, taking cooking classes, and learning new techniques.
Whenever possible, I use local ingredients including fresh eggs, farmers market vegetables, and local honey. I jokingly call my cooking “healthy-ish.” While I’ve never met a cinnamon roll I didn’t like, I can usually balance it out with fresh fruit or vegetables!
If you’ve wondered why guests often choose a traditional Bed & Breakfast instead of an Airbnb, breakfast is one of the biggest reasons.
Be sure to check back for information about upcoming cooking classes!
1. My Favorite Part… The Guests
More than anything else, I’ve learned that the greatest part of owning The H.S. Clay House is the people.
I love welcoming first-time visitors, greeting returning guests, and watching friendships develop over breakfast. I’m grateful to everyone who has stayed with us, follows us on social media, or recommends us to family and friends.
I’ve especially enjoyed getting to know the cycling community through the many riders who stay with us while exploring the KATY Trail. Every guest has a story to tell, and every visit teaches me something new.
We all crave genuine connections. One of the greatest joys of running a Bed & Breakfast is watching those connections happen naturally.
🏡 Looking Ahead In An Augusta Bed & Breakfast
If these first five years have taught me anything, it’s that there will always be more to learn.
I can’t wait to discover what the next five years bring, meet new guests, welcome familiar faces back through the front door, and continue creating memorable experiences here at The H.S. Clay House Bed & Breakfast.
If you’ve never stayed with us before, I’d love the opportunity to welcome you and show you why so many guests return to Augusta year after year.
